What Do Custom Temporary Tattoos Actually Cost?
Most suppliers answer this question with a range so wide it is useless. The honest answer is that per-piece cost depends on four variables you control and one you do not. Here is what we charge, why the numbers move, and where first-time buyers routinely waste money.
Every figure below is our own factory-direct pricing. Prices are indicative in USD and are confirmed at quotation once artwork, size, ink type and packing are fixed.
Indicative unit pricing by product type
| Product type | MOQ | Indicative price per piece |
|---|---|---|
| Matte finish | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Glow-in-the-dark | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Waterless peel-and-stick | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Fluorescent / blacklight | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Semi-permanent herbal | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Makeup / cosmetic | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Christmas themed | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Halloween themed | 100 pcs | $0.15 - $0.80 |
| Metallic foil | 100 pcs | $0.20 - $0.90 |
| UV color-changing | 100 pcs | $0.20 - $0.90 |
| DIY glitter kit | 100 pcs | $0.20 - $1.00 |
| Custom packaging | 500 pcs | $0.50 - $2.00 |
The spread within each row is not padding. A single-colour 40mm design on standard water-transfer paper sits at the bottom; a full-coverage A5 sheet with multiple inks sits at the top. Same category, very different job.
What actually moves the price
Artwork coverage and size. Ink and substrate consumption scale with printed area more than with piece count. A small logo decal and a full-sleeve design from the same category can differ by several multiples.
Process complexity. Metallic foil requires a foil layer rather than ink, which is why it starts at $0.20 instead of $0.15. UV-reactive and glitter formats involve specialty materials for the same reason. Fine detail also raises cost: very thin strokes and small text are harder to hold in a foil layer and may break up, so we advise on minimum stroke weight during proofing.
Packaging. This is the line item buyers most often forget to budget. Custom packaging starts at a 500-piece MOQ, not 100, and runs $0.50-$2.00 per piece because board weight, print coverage and structural complexity drive cost far more than quantity does. A single-panel kraft sleeve and a printed rigid box with a window are not comparable products.
Quantity. Setup work is largely fixed per run, so it amortises across more pieces as volume rises. Volume discounts of up to 40% apply at 500+ pieces. That threshold is the single most useful number on this page: if your true demand is near 500, ordering 500 is usually cheaper per unit than 300 twice.
The four costs buyers forget
1. Sample fees on small first orders
Physical samples cost $50-$100 depending on complexity, take 3-5 days to produce plus 2-4 days to ship, and are fully refunded only on orders over 500 pieces.
This matters more than it looks. If your first order is 100 pieces, the sample fee is not refunded and can exceed the goods value. At $0.15-$0.80 per piece, 100 pieces is $15-$80 of product against a $50-$100 sample fee. Plan for it rather than discovering it at invoice stage. Samples are still worth ordering - a failed 500-piece run costs far more - but budget honestly.
2. Freight
Three options, and the difference is large:
- DHL / FedEx / UPS: 3-7 days, trackable, highest cost per kg
- Air freight: 7-12 days, better for mid-size orders
- Sea freight: 25-35 days, only economic for bulk
For a 100-500 piece test order the shipment is light, so courier is normally the right call despite the rate. For 5,000+ pieces the freight method changes your landed cost materially, and sea becomes worth the six-week wait.
3. Rush surcharge
Standard production is 7-15 business days after artwork approval. Rush service compresses this to 5-7 days for a 20% surcharge. Treat rush as insurance for a fixed date, not as a scheduling method. If every order you place needs rush, your planning window is wrong.
4. Seasonal miss risk
Halloween artwork cannot be sold on 1 November. Christmas designs cannot move in January. For date-locked seasonal lines, a late order is a total loss rather than a delayed sale, because the inventory carries no value after the date passes. This risk is worth more than any unit-price saving. See the seasonal ordering calendar for the deadlines by product line.
A worked example: 100 pieces versus 500
Assume a matte design at the low end of the standard range, $0.15 per piece.
| Line item | 100-piece test order | 500-piece order |
|---|---|---|
| Goods (100 x $0.15 / 500 x $0.15 less up to 40% volume discount) | $15 | $45 - $75 |
| Sample fee | $50 - $100 | $50 - $100, refunded |
| Net sample cost | $50 - $100 | $0 |
| Courier freight (light parcel) | quoted separately | quoted separately |
Goods figures use the published $0.15 low-end rate. The 500-piece column shows the range created by the up-to-40% volume discount; exact discount depends on artwork and specification and is confirmed at quotation. Freight is quoted per shipment rather than published as a flat rate.
Two things stand out. First, on a 100-piece order the sample fee is the largest single cost, not the product. Second, the 500-piece order reaches the discount threshold and recovers the sample fee, which is why buyers who already know their demand should not split it into multiple 100-piece runs.
If you genuinely do not know yet, the 100-piece route still makes sense - that is exactly what it is for. Just cost it correctly.
Factory-direct versus buying through an intermediary
| Factor | Factory-direct | Trading company |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | No intermediary margin (intermediaries typically add 30-50%) | 30-50% markup on factory price |
| MOQ | 100 pieces | Usually 500-1,000+ |
| Design support | Free, unlimited revisions | Usually a paid add-on |
| Compliance documents | FDA-compliant inks, EN-71, CPSIA, MSDS provided | Varies by supplier |
| Response time | Within 24 hours | Typically 2-5 days |
| Sample fee | Refunded on 500+ piece orders | Rarely refunded |
The markup column is the one to interrogate when comparing quotes. If two suppliers quote the same product at prices differing by a third or more, one of them is not the manufacturer. Ask directly who runs the press.
Payment terms
We accept T/T bank transfer, PayPal, Western Union and Alibaba Trade Assurance. Standard terms are 30% deposit to start production and 70% balance before shipment. Flexible terms are available for repeat customers after a good track record is established. Trade Assurance is a sensible choice for a first order with any new supplier, including us.
How to get an accurate number
Send four things and we can quote properly rather than approximately:
- Product type, or the effect you want (we will map it to a format)
- Finished size and artwork, or a reference image
- Quantity, including whether you expect to reorder
- Destination country and needed-by date
Design support is free with unlimited revisions, and we quote within 24 hours. If you only have a rough idea, describe it - you do not need print-ready files to start.
